Suicidal ideation is defined as a desire or consideration of suicide. Suicidal ideation can be divided into two types: passive and active. Passive suicidal ideation occurs when one wish they were dead or that they could die but have no intention of killing themselves. Active suicidal ideation, on the other hand, includes not only thinking about it but also intending to commit suicide, as well as planning how to do it. Suicidal ideation is a symptom of both major depression and bipolar disorder depression, but it can also happen in people with other mental illnesses or no mental illness at all.
Suicidal ideation can be caused by a variety of factors. These thoughts frequently occur when one is feeling hopeless and out of control in their lives, and as if it has no meaning or purpose. Relationship issues, trauma, substance abuse, a crisis of some sort, work pressure, a physical health issue, or financial difficulties may all contribute to these feelings and thoughts. Any mental illness, such as depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or anxiety, can also play a role.
Be aware that passive suicidal ideation, such as wishing to die in their sleep or an accident rather than by their own hands, is just as dangerous as active suicidal ideation. It has a mixture of active and passive components, and it can quickly turn active.
If the situation is critical, one should contact their loved one's doctor or a mental health professional, or they may need to contact a suicide hotline for advice or assistance. One should continue to monitor them until they've returned to a healthy state of mind.
